Dermatology

What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is the medical-surgical specialty that deals with all skin diseases (dermatoses). There are many:

  • Some are infectious: viral, bacterial, mycotic, parasitic.
  • Some are inflammatory and/or immuno-allergic: contact eczema, atopic dermatitis, certain urticaria, drug eruptions, some occupational dermatoses ...
  • Some are immunological: lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, bullous diseases, scleroderma, vasculitis, aphtosis, lichen planus. Notice that some common dermatoses are not completely understood: psoriasis, acne, rosacea, alopecia areata.

Dermatology is also involved in the pathology of hair, nails, and mucous membranes. (www.sfdermato.org)
Taking care of cutaneous tumours is a major activity in the daily life of a dermatologist. Those tumors are either benign, like nevi (moles) or cysts, or malignant, like carcinomas or melanomas.

LMM is equipped with a digital video-dermoscopy tool that allows us to refine our clinical examination of cutaneous tumours by tracking signs of degeneration that are invisible to the naked eye.

Furthermore, we use it to optimise our clinical monitoring using image comparison software.Based on our clinical and dermoscopic examinations, a surgical intervention is sometimes necessary.

Mostly performed in our offices, dermatological surgery makes it possible to excise cutaneous lesions with closures ranging from simple stitches to autoplasty (strip or total skin graft).
The type of intervention that will be performed and its venue depend on the nature of the lesion and the patient’s medical history (www.groupechirsfd.com).

Aesthetic dermatology, taught by a university and after postgraduate training, is another area of the specialty that is becoming increasingly important because of population aging, continuous quality improvement of the materials used, and media coverage of aesthetic rejuvenation techniques (Botulinum acid, Hyaluronic acid, Laser ...) (www.grdec.com). (www.laser-opale.fr).

This wide range of activities shows the privileged place held by the dermatologist in preventing, diagnosing and treating skin diseases and skin imperfections. Their early management also boosts self - esteem, thus helping improve the general state of the patients’ health.
